Please Answer!! 10 pts??

I am almost 14 (going into 9th grade) and responsible and have good grades. But, my dad won%26#039;t let me have IM!! He says that he %26quot;doesn%26#039;t like instant messenger%26quot;, but it%26#039;s free, you can block bad people, and he won%26#039;t even be the one using it!! I don%26#039;t think it%26#039;s fair that he won%26#039;t let me have it. HELP!!
Please Answer!! 10 pts??
You can talk to him, or just get one anyway. That%26#039;s a stupid rule!
Please Answer!! 10 pts??
have him try it out and see for himself how safe it is
Reply:Well what do you mean by %26quot;HELP%26quot;!

If you mean how to make him let you have it, tell him what you said and say you won%26#039;t meet anyone new on there.
Reply:i%26#039;ve had IM since 4th grade
Reply:mwahahaha

www.meebo.com will allow you to sign into yahoo, msn, aim, and google messengers

all you need to do is make the account on each of the messengers websites and you can access them from meebo.com
Reply:just tell him that you are only going to use to keep in touch with your friends and it is a cheaper way to communicate to your friends than talking on the phone.
Reply:tell him that you have to add people before they can talk to you cuz it true. and say you wont add anyone you dont know. and u can have email but not IM that kinda makes no sense. ive had mine since i was like 8.
Reply:I%26#039;m 23 and my husband won%26#039;t let me have IM because he says everytime I use it, the computer gets a virus. I survive without it...but barely. :(
Reply:he is your father, and the only one you have. do as you are told. A lot of pervy people use IM and it is understandable he does not want you on it.
Reply:idk wat 2 tell you did you try telling him wat you can do on IM?
Reply:What you should do is show your parents how it works. So he can see for himself that is completly harmless.
Reply:im 14 and tell him that every one has it and people make fun of me in school[!LIE!] because i dont have I.M they think im a tramp. lol
Reply:Well Whats the reason hes not letting you? If it%26#039;s bcuz of weirdos tell him u can block them. Show him the program and stuff and let him read into it (it%26#039;ll show you care what he thinks and that you%26#039;ve done you%26#039;re research). If it%26#039;s bcuz of boys tell him you won%26#039;t talk to them only ur grl friends.

Hope this worls :)
Reply:you can also let him monitor you while you use it for a while so he can see for himself that it isn%26#039;t bad.
Reply:just use it in school or in an internet cafe something like that am sure in tme your dad will come around

Reply:It%26#039;s not you, it all those creeps out there. He loves you and wants to protect you. You may feel old enough and responsible enough to handle everything the internet has to throw at you through IM, but to him, you are still his little baby, and he wants to protect you.
Reply:what my friend had to do was she had to right out on a peice of paper that she will keep her grades up, let her parents monitor her im and be responsible on the computer. her parents are really strict but they let her have it aftera couple weeks where as me...i just got one cuz my parents couldnt care less...but anyway...if u want one really bad then thats what you should do...write the stuff on the paper like my friend did...hope this helps!
Reply:You should try talking to him and explaining to him the positives of instant messaging and ensure him that you wouldn%26#039;t add anyone that you don%26#039;t know...remind him that he could trust you
Reply:Ask your dad to give you a specific answer as to why he does not want you IMing, instead of his typical %26quot;I don%26#039;t like instant messenger.%26quot; It may be that he is concerned for your safety, in which case you should make a list of exactly who you will be IMing so he will be less worried. The best thing you can do is to invite him to try IMing himself. Maybe then he will see that is safe and harmless if used carefully. Also, be very mature and tell him all the things you listed above in your question. Yelling or whining doesn%26#039;t help. Hope this helps!
Reply:Explain to him about the positive things about it, leave out the negative things. Have some real things to back up your opinion. Tell him it%26#039;s useful for homework help, since someone%26#039;s phone can be busy. IM is also good for chatting with friends instead of going all the way to their house and talk. You can also do so much more. Convince him!!! Good Luck!!! :D
Reply:Ask hi if you can have it for a trial period of say a month over the summer. Tell him he can check up on it anytime he wants (just make sure you only talk about things you%26#039;d want your dad to see, but don%26#039;t make it seem fake). This should help build his trust in you. If you go behind his back and get it anyway he%26#039;ll find out and won%26#039;t trust you over and be firmer with other such rules he makes.

Make sure you talk to him calmly and maturely, if you act childish over this he probably won%26#039;t think you%26#039;re responsible enough to have it.

I hope this works out for you, what ever you do.

Reply:Just show him what you do vs a chat room he will see it is a lot safer (but I highly recomend msn) but if he dosn%26#039;t let you it is ok he just is trying to protect you!
Reply:ask him why not. %26quot;I don%26#039;t like it%26quot; is the stupidest reason I%26#039;ve ever heard. Iming iso completely safe, and a good way to communicate.
Reply:I%26#039;m 14 as well and i know what your goin through ive had my IM since i was 10 see if your friends can show him theirs and show them how safe it is 4 years and nothing has happened to me and i have only talked to my friends and i ignored and blocked people i didn%26#039;t know just be relaxed and don%26#039;t do it when he has a bad day or is just in a bad mood make sure he%26#039;s happy
Reply:i thought my IM was giving me a virus so i quit using it. just use your cell phone instead. you can call all over the world for free anyway.
Reply:ive had im (msn) since grade 1.

hahhaa.

just say your only going to use it to comunicate with yr friends
Reply:Your dad is probably concerned. When I was 14, my dad took my IM away for a while because of the news and all the girls who were meeting men online for sex and what not, he%26#039;s got every right to be concerned. When I was 17, my family made a big deal about myspace because it%26#039;s even worse than IM. I%26#039;m not the type of girl that%26#039;d meet people online, and I%26#039;ve gained my parents trust. Explain to your dad that you%26#039;re not into meeting strangers online. I suggest you do some research about new stories.

That%26#039;s a bunch of news stories about online sex predators. Read this, talk to your dad, convince him you%26#039;re smarter than this. He%26#039;s just trying to protect you from the countries scum. Play it to his advantage, tell him who you%26#039;ll be talking to, give him their screen names and e-mails and what not. Be completely open and honest about it with him. Let him know you%26#039;re safe and smart, and it%26#039;s okay for him to check up on you. Tell him %26quot;I understand your concern about strangers and sex predators, but I%26#039;m smarter than that, I won%26#039;t go anywhere near crossing that line. This is who I%26#039;m going to talk to, this is why I%26#039;m going to talk to them, these are their screen names%26quot; Be open and honest

When I got grounded and got my IM taken away, I just went to AIM Express. You create a screenname and use AIM right from the website, you don%26#039;t download anything. Just clear your website history and he%26#039;ll never know, if you want it that bad.

However, I really think you should really read those articles and talk to him, it%26#039;s always better when you don%26#039;t need to sneak around.
Reply:Your Dad may unfortunately be right. IM can be used to send video and audio, if you have a camera and microphone. He has no doubt heard many true stories of abuses that have and can occur with these devices. His only fault is that he is over protective ... which is really no fault at all. Some hackers can turn cameras and audio on without your knowledge. Even texting the wrong people can be dangerous. IM is fun, but there are also hazards.
